Meet the largest bird in the world - the Ostrich! It can sprout up to 2.7m tall – and that’s so much taller than your daddy! But despite being a huge, massive bird, it can run like the wind! While other birds have 3 to 4 toes, this bird has only two toes on each foot. Amazingly, it is the fastest two-legged runner on land! It actually runs as fast as a bus! Now that’s what I call speed! Unlike all other birds, this one can’t fly. Yeap! It is too big to fly. Instead, the big bird holds its wings out to help balance itself while running or with a sudden change of direction.
The Ostrich is the only bird that lays giant eggs! Big, gigantic eggs! It can be as big as 15cm long and weighing over 20 times more than a chicken egg! The nest can hold about 60 eggs at one time. It takes 35 to 45 days for the giant eggs to hatch. The male and female ostriches will take turns to sit on the eggs until it hatches. At birth, an ostrich’s chicks can be as big as a chicken. This big bird can live up to 75 years!
The ostrich has the largest eye in the animal world, measuring almost 5cm in diameter. That is 5 times bigger than a human eye! It can easily spot predators like lions or leopards from long distances and can defend themselves with a front snap kick! Hiak!
Since the ostrich does not have any teeth, it swallows pebbles to crush its food. As it lives in the dry, hot desert, this big bird loves water! It loves to drink and can never resist taking a dip when it sees water. So, if it’s bath time, you’ll definitely know who is the first to be in line!
